The Dell PowerEdge R720 is a 2U rackmount server which can come in a dual or single processor configuration. In a dual processor configuration, it can address up to 1536GB (64GB X 24) of DDR3 LRDIMMs with a max frequency of 1866 MHz. In triple channel configuration, the maximum is reduced to 1333 MHz. The R720 can address up to 768GB (32GB X 24) of DDR3 RDIMMs with a maximum frequency of 1866 MHz. In triple channel configuration, the maximum frequency is reduced to 1333MHz. This system can also address UDIMMs but only two DIMMs may be installed per channel so you are limited to 16 DIMMs. It can address up to 8GB DDR3 UDIMMs for a total of 128GB at a maximum operating frequency of 1600MHz. In a single processor configuration for RDIMMs, LRDIMMs and UDIMMs the only difference is the maximum capacity is halved.
The processors that this system support includes all of the E5-2600 v1 and E5-2600 v2 series but in order to support the V2 series the system must come installed or be flashed with BIOS Revision 2.0 or newer. The R720 has up to 16 2.5" drive bays. This system has 7 available expansion slots with the correct risers installed. A riser may be installed to have additional room for a graphics card.
The R720 can be equipped with up to 2 redundant 495W to 1100W power supplies. In a configuration with 2 E5-2650 v2 processors, 24 8GB DDR3 RDIMMs, dual 300GB 15K drives and redundant 750W power supplies you can expect idle power consumption to be roughly 97 watts. This will cost roughly $84.41 for a full year of idling with the national average cost of $.10/KWh. At full load you can expect power consumption of roughly 293 watts. It would cost roughly $260.89 to run the system at full load continuously for a year.
